FOLLOWING JESUS - As we begin following Jesus, a whole new world opens up to us called the Kingdom of God. "A simple layman armed with Scripture is to be believed above a pope or a council without it.” Martin Lutherġ. When you facilitate a DBS, you are essentially co-leading with God’s Spirit, who is the major player in guiding seekers toward Jesus. A DBS is based on the belief that God’s word is powerful (Hebrews 4:12, 2 Timothy 3:16) and that God’s Spirit is faithful to lead us into all truth (John 16:13). You don’t need to be a Bible or theology expert to launch an effective DBS. For more information and the steps of starting a DBS group, click on the picture (How to Launch a Discovery Bible Study). A discovery group is a non- threatening way to start discipling someone even before they become a believer. Discovery groups begin with a person of peace (a spiritual seeker) and include that person’s family, friends, or network of social relationships-whoever they can invite to explore with them.Ī Discovery Bible Study is an opportunity for people to discover first-hand what the Bible says about God, about people, and what it means to follow Jesus. And a Discovery Bible Study (DBS, or sometimes just a “discovery group” for short) is a great way to do that. If they say yes, ask if there are others who might like to join in.Exploring what the Bible says in a small group is a simple next step for people who are curious about God. So how do you launch Discovery Bible Studies? Simply invite someone to start the studies with you. Discipleship is similar to training or apprenticeship and the results of it affect every area of our lives. It also requires us to obey him, share the message with others and enable them to also become his disciples. Discipleship is not just learning about Jesus. Jesus called a small group of people (his disciples) to follow him, and equipped them to share the good news of the Kingdom of God with others. Disciples who obey God's word and share it are more likely to make disciples of others. The last two questions teach people from the start of the need to obey God's word, and the need to share it with others.Despite their simplicity, the Discovery Bible Study questions are very powerful and people often come up with profound discoveries from the stories. That means that anyone can run a DBS with anybody, anywhere. The structure is easy to teach, easy to remember and easy to replicate. It all seems pretty simple, right? So what is so good about DBS and why does it work? These questions promote an understanding of authority of scripture, as well as encouraging practical discipleship and evangelism. We normally conclude each session by sharing what as made us happy and what we are struggling with. If this is God's word for my lives how will I obey it?.What does this story tell me about people (or myself)?.What does this story tell me about God?.Once people are happy with the story we ask the following questions: After this, we read the scripture passage for the current study, usually several times and then ask people to retell the story in their own words. The Discovery Group encourages disciple-making, obedience, ministry, & leadership development.ĭiscovery Bible Studies normally start with a review of the previous session's actions (unless it is the first study). Simple, memorable questions allow participants to understand the character of God, encourage them to obey what they are learning and help them to share it with others.ĭiscovery Bible Studies work best in small groups of between four and eight people - preferably people who already know each other.Ī Discovery Group allows people to discover God as they read His Word.
