Before they were able to destroy Soul Edge Inferno sucked the two of them into the Astral Chaos, a hellish dimension within the sword, where he attacked Xianghua in a fury for letting Siegfried escape the grasp of the sword, unfortunetly for him Xianghua was actually wielding the holy blade Soul Calibur, the one thing that could destroy Soul Edge, and she slashed Inferno apart causing Soul Edge to explode into pieces. The castle was raided by Kilik and Xianghua who were looking to destroy Soul Edge, Nightmare sensed that Kilik had the malfestation curse within him that was being supressed by his holy mirror, this made Nightmare ask why Kilik was resisting his fate before they engaged in a violent battle that ending with Kilik letting out his Malfested evil side to temporly knock Nightmare out where he began to remember his human life as Siegfried. Nightmare made this castle his home where his pet hawk flew above watching for more victims, Nightmare soon formed a group of elite warriors who he had made join his cause through manipulation called the Schwarzsturm consisting of Ivy Valentine, Aeon Calcos and Astaroth who all gathered many more souls for Nightmare to consume. Eventually Nightmare single handedly took over the massive fortress city Ostrheinsburg, slaughtering everyone and cursing the entire area around it so that it was not only haunted by the ghosts of the damned but ressurected any bodies of those who died there transforming them into the Malfested, servants of Soul Edge. Nightmare under Inferno's influence went on a bloody crusade killing many people in order to use absorb their souls to power up Soul Edge, not caring who they were as long as he could take their lives, he especially seeked out powerful warriors who had incredibly strong souls. Upon grabbing the hilt of the sword the unstable Siegfried and sword melded so perfectly it created a burst of dark energy known as the Evil Seed which caused various calamities accross the globe, once the dust settled Siegfried had become the Azure Knight Nightmare. Originally choosing the pirate Cervantes (who became a zombified butcher) before finally settling on the knight Siefgried who was able to defeat Inferno in a duel which proved that he'd be the perfect choice. To do this, he needed a warrior capable of wielding Soul Edge to transform him or her into the ultimate evil warrior of destruction capable of wield Soul Edge. Soul Edge housed the flame demon Inferno, who wanted to wreck chaos and spread darkness across the world.
Long ago, predating the existence of the world, there was a demonic sword known as Soul Edge.
